1838 Liberty Head Ten Dollar Gold Eagle PCGS XF40
First Year of the Original Liberty Head Eagle Design!
Although often listed as part of the regular Liberty Head Eagle series first struck in 1838, the design of Miss Liberty in the 1838 and 1839 issues is somewhat different than those minted from 1840 onwards. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the obverse features a profile portrait of Liberty facing left wearing a small coronet-style crown inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings and with a shield over its breast and clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, this highly desirable first-year-of-issue coin has a reeded edge and is 27 mm in diameter. |
