1913 Indian Head Five Dollar Gold Half Eagle PCGS MS63
The Last U.S. Gold Half Eagle Series!
This eye-opening gold Half Eagle features a design concept unique in American coinage. Created by noted sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, a leading student of the illustrious Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this coin was Pratt’s effort to continue Saint-Gaudens attempt to elevate the stature America’s coinage designs.
Its incuse design – where the surface of the coin is flat and all the design elements are sunken below the surface – features a realistic looking Native American facing left and wearing a feathered headdress. Above the portrait along the rim appears the word LIBERTY. Thirteen incuse stars, representing the original 13 colonies, appear along the rim, with the date appearing below the portrait. On the reverse is an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows along with an olive branch. Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin is 21.6 mm in diameter. |
