1873 Closed 3 Liberty Head Five Dollar Gold Half Eagle PCGS MS63
Classic Gold Coin Series Spans Two Centuries!
This long-lived series was designed by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. The obverse features a profile portrait of Liberty facing left wearing a small coronet-style crown inscribed LIBERTY. Because of its design, this coin can be referred to as either a Liberty Head or Coronet Head half eagle. The coin’s reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings with a shield over its breast and clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
Because this is a Variety 2 Liberty Head Half Eagle, the Motto “In God We Trust” appears on a banner on the reverse above the eagle. Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin is 21.6 mm in diameter. This classic gold coin’s design remained essentially unchanged for 70 years with the exception of the addition of the Motto beginning in 1866. |
