Minted only from 1834-1838, Classic Head Five Dollar Gold Half Eagles are the shortest-lived series out of all U.S. gold coins issued for circulation. Designed by William Kneass, the second Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the obverse features a profile portrait of a curly-haired Miss Liberty facing left wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY. In addition, 13 stars signifying the original thirteen colonies appear along the rim. The reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings with a shield over its breast and clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Struck in 89.92% gold and 10.08% silver & copper, the coin’s diameter is 22.5 mm and has a reeded edge. |
