1854/1854 Liberty Head Twenty Dollar Gold Double Eagle Small Date VP-001 NGC MS61 CAC This is a “Type 1 Without Motto” Double Eagle coin struck with a clear overdate. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a left-facing profile portrait of Liberty wearing a small crown (called a coronet) inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The “Without Motto Type 1” reverse design is a modified version of the Great Seal of the United States. The coin, the largest denomination regular-issue U.S. Mint coin, is struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, with a diameter of 34mm. |
